Many times have you desired to hear these words
which I am saying to you,
and you have no one else to hear them from.
Jesus was obviously not one among many teachers with a similar message,
but was an outlandish exception with no one else around who taught something that even in
the slightest way resembled his teachings. It was probably a close circle of regular
followers - disciples - that he counted among those who many times desired him to speak.
However, Quispel (2004) quotes Irenaeus of Lyon, who most likely quoted the original
authentic phrasing of the saying: "Often I desired to speak these words to you, but there
was no one asking me". Quispel points out that this saying forms a doublet with saying-92.
In that case, Jesus laments about the lack of interest for his teachings,
perhaps even amongst his regular followers.
